This box is joined at the corners by dovetails, and the top is inlaid with 5 different species of wood.  The top lifts off and is held in place with a rabbet.

The dovetails were cut with a router guided on a shop built dovetail jig.

How it comes together

The box together, and the top being mortised to receive the inlay.

The box constructed out of Ribbon grain African Mahogany is inlaid with (clockwise starting in upper left corner) Cocobolo, Honduran Rosewood, Walnut, and Lacewood with a perimeter band of maple.

The box is finished with a semi-gloss spray on polyurethane.
